A la caída del Imperio Babilónico, los asirios heredaron el conocimiento astrológico el cual se extendió por la India, China, Persia y finalmente Grecia donde se preparó el primer horóscopo individual.
A los filósofos pitagóricos del siglo IV a. c., se debe la idea del cosmos como un universo bien ordenado y de los planetas como cuerpos perfectos (esferas) que se mueven de manera uniforme. Asimismo, en ese pensamiento griego clásico en donde el mito está presente junto con las ciencias y las matemáticas, no hay lugar para la astrología en la manera en que la vemos hoy en día, aunque al cielo se le considere divino y perfecto.
Es más adelante con Platón que se comienza a desarrollar la correspondencia existente entre el macrocosmos (el universo) y el microcosmos (el hombre), debido al carácter divino e inmortal de las almas del mundo y del hombre, así como la idea de la divinidad de los astros.
Luego, Aristóteles refiere que el cielo tiene sus propias leyes, independientes de las humanas, siendo este concepto el punto de partida de su explicación mecánica del sistema planetario.
Por otro lado en Alejandría, centro cultural del mundo helenizado a partir del siglo IV a. c., la convivencia del filósofo griego, del sacerdote egipcio y del astrólogo caldeo, convierte a la antigua astrología en una labor con características científicas muy intelectualizada. A eso contribuyen las corrientes filosóficas de la época, con connotaciones místicas y sobre todo el estoicismo, que le confiere una profunda transformación.
El estoicismo fue fundado por Zenon de Citio (aprox. 333-262 a. C.), de origen chipriota quién se trasladó a Atenas en el 311 a. c. El término estoicismo proviene del lugar en el que Zenón comenzó, en el año 301 a. C., a dar sus lecciones en la Stóa poikilé (en griego Στοα, stoa, ‘pórtico’), que era el Pórtico pintado del ágora de Atenas, centro cultural del mundo griego y en donde se congregaban las principales escuelas de filosofía. El estoicismo fue la última gran escuela de filosofía del mundo griego en ser fundada, y continuó existiendo hasta que en el año 529 d. C. el emperador Justiniano clausuró la Escuela de Atenas.
Para los estoicos el universo es un todo armonioso y causalmente relacionado que se rige por un principio activo, el Logos cósmico y universal del que el hombre también participa. Este logos cósmico, que es siempre el mismo, es llamado también Pneuma (‘soplo’, Spiritu en latín), aliento ígneo, ley natural, naturaleza (physis), necesidad y moira (‘destino’, Fatum en latín), nombres todos ellos que hacen referencia a un poder que crea, unifica y mantiene unidas todas las cosas y que no es simplemente un poder físico: el pneuma o logos universal es una entidad fundamentalmente racional: es Dios, un alma del mundo o mente (razón) que todo lo rige y de cuya ley nada ni nadie puede sustraerse. Inmanente al mundo, el logos es corpóreo, penetra y actúa sobre la materia (hylé): principio pasivo, inerte y eterno que, en virtud del pneuma o logos, produce todo ser y acontecer. Todo en la naturaleza es mezcla de estos dos principios corpóreos.
Mientras que para Aristóteles el alma humana era el resultado de una especial organización de la vida que desaparecía con la muerte, para los estoicos era parte integrante del alma del mundo y la muerte la devolvía a su lugar de origen. De aquí nace la vinculación entre la vida humana y la vida de las estrellas.
Está concepción de un cosmos dotado de un principio rector inteligente lleva a una visión determinista del mundo donde nada azaroso puede acaecer ya que todo está gobernado por una ley racional que es inmanente (como su logos) y necesaria; el destino no es más que la estricta cadena de los acontecimientos (causas) ligados entre sí. El azar no existe y no hay que temer al destino, sino aceptarlo.
El estoicismo influirá en numerosas corrientes filosóficas posteriores, desde los primeros padres de la Iglesia hasta Descartes y Kant. Durante el Renacimiento, el estoicismo ganó difusión entre las corrientes humanistas y universitarias. Se utiliza cotidianamente el término «estoicismo» para referirse a la actitud de tomarse las adversidades de la vida con fortaleza y aceptación.
Se observa en esta a breve reseña histórica cómo se comienza a relacionar la astrología con la filosofía y sí inicialmente existía un cierto vínculo entre la astrología y la magia, con el paso del tiempo fue cultivada por eruditos más diligentes que conocieron y divulgaron su influencia sobre el carácter humano.
